Moving Tips
To help you get the best value from your move, we have come up with some moving tips that’ll help you save both time and money…
1. Plan Ahead
The earlier you begin planning, the more prepared you’ll be when the time comes to move. Some of the things you’ll want to do first include:
- Book early! At least one month in advance helps ensure your date is available
- Call for in-person moving quotes
- Prepare a moving checklist
- Take an inventory of your belongings
- Purge any items you no longer want (sell, donate or throw away)
- Begin the packing process
2. Room to Move
One of the most important moving tips we can suggest is to give your moving company space to do their job. This includes clearing key access points such as:
- Driveways
- Exterior walkways
- Entrances
- Hallways
- Staircases
- Apartment moves need to book the elevator
3. Smaller Items
You can shave money off of your moving estimates if you handle some of the smaller items yourself. This includes things like:
- Liquids (put in plastic bags and bins in case of a leak)
- Plants
- Pictures
- Lamps
They don’t take a lot of space in a regular vehicle, but they can be quite time consuming to secure in a large moving trailer.
4. Packing
Pre-packing your belongings into appropriately sized boxes will greatly expedite the moving process. For heavier items, like books, place them in smaller boxes so that they’re manageable. You may leave clothes in dressers. However, small, spillable items need to be packed separately. Furniture may get tipped on its side during the moving process and items can fall out. Full file cabinets and desks should be unpacked or frame damage will result. For fragile items, like glassware, individually wrap them in paper before packing (not newspaper- it will leave ink stains).
When packing boxes, it’s a good idea to:
- Use large boxes for light items, ie. comforters, pillows, etc.
- Mark ‘fragile’ if necessary
- Clearly label them- what’s in it and what room it belongs in
- Fill any open space with packing material so items don’t shift. Do not overpack!
- Use packing tape to secure boxes once they’re full
- Stack boxes against the wall - it will allow the movers to choose what will fit into their trailer most effectively
- Have a floor plan of where to place furniture etc. in your new home
5. Disassembly
Anything you can dismantle before moving will take up less space in the trailer, resulting in a more efficient move. Following these moving tips will ensure you can reassemble them on the other side:
- Secure loose items (screws, nuts etc.) in a labeled container
- Keep assembly instructions or use smartphone to take pictures of the process
- Keep disassembled components together, if possible
- Check carefully that nothing has been left behind in your old home
